The sharp rise in global food prices in 2008 was a major turning point. It showed how fragile the international food system really is, and how it can threaten food security, especially in developing countries. This paper discuss about the multiple causes of that crisis and argues that four related factors are likely to make food shortages and price increasing in the coming years.
First, the world's population is growing, more people are moving to cities, and incomes are rising in developing countries. These changes are shifting what people want to eat. People are not just eating more calories—they are eating more meat and processed foods. This puts much more pressure on farming resources than traditional grain-based diets. Second, climate change is making farming less predictable. Unusual rainfall, stronger heat waves, and extreme weather are lowering crop yields and making rural poverty worse. Recent studies show that if emissions stay high, global food production could drop by nearly 24%. Key crops like maize would be hit hardest, which would push food prices up over time. Third, making biofuels is increasing competition for land and crops. Many countries have rules requiring biofuels to be mixed with gasoline or diesel. For example, Brazil requires 15% biodiesel in diesel, and the U.S. offers incentives for renewable fuels. As a result, large amounts of soybeans, maize, and other grains go to energy instead of food or feed. This tightens global food supplies and drives prices up. Fourth, food loss and waste remain a big problem. About 13.2% of food is lost between harvest and the store, and another 19% is wasted by consumers and restaurants. That adds up to over 1.2 billion tons every year. This waste is especially serious because in 2024, more than 295 million people faced severe food shortages. In conclusion, this paper looks at how these four factors work together to affect the global food supply. It argues that without targeted policies to fix these issues, the world is heading toward lasting food shortages and greater political instability.
