Introduction: High mallow (Malva sylvestris), a common herb traditionally used in herbal remedies, has been suggested to possess medicinal properties that may be beneficial in managing urinary tract infections (UTIs). This systematic review aims to evaluate the existing literature on the therapeutic efficacy of high mallow in UTI treatment, exploring its potential as a natural remedy for alleviating UTI symptoms and promoting urinary health.
Methods: A comprehensive systematic search was done in electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, using relevant keywords. Studies until 2023 were included. The screening process involved specific criteria, and data were extracted and analyzed.
Results: A number of studies met the inclusion criteria. These studies explored the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties of high mallow in the context of UTIs. Findings suggested that high mallow extracts or preparations may possess potential antibacterial actions against uropathogenic bacteria, exhibit anti-inflammatory effects on the urinary tract mucosa, and support urinary system health through diuretic activity.
Conclusion: The current evidence synthesized in this systematic review indicates that high mallow holds promise as a natural remedy for UTI management. The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of high mallow may offer complementary support in alleviating UTI symptoms and promoting urinary tract health. Further clinical research is warranted to validate these findings, explore optimal dosages and formulations, and establish the efficacy and safety of high mallow as a potential therapeutic agent for UTIs.
