Advanced active and smart food packaging technologies, while offering significant benefits in extending shelf life and enhancing food quality, present a growing concern regarding microplastic contamination. This study reviews the potential for degradation and migration of microplastics from complex polymeric materials commonly used in these sophisticated systems, such as oxygen scavengers and intelligent sensors. Factors contributing to particle formation, including mechanical stress and chemical interactions, alongside migration pathways into food, are analyzed. The findings highlight that while these packaging innovations are crucial for modern supply chains, the potential health implications of ingested microplastics derived from packaging require urgent investigation. Consequently, there is a critical need for the development of safer, potentially biodegradable materials, standardized analytical methods for microplastic detection, and a holistic approach to sustainable packaging design to ensure both food safety and environmental integrity.
